What is an Each Way bet?

The Each-Way bet is a popular choice in horse racing, especially for major events like the Grand National, where bettors aim to cover multiple potential outcomes. The bet consists of two parts: one for the horse to win, and another for it to place in one of the top positions (usually 2nd to 4th, or even 5th and 6th in some cases). This dual structure gives bettors a chance to win even if their horse doesn't finish first, offering a safety net if their selection places.

Each-Way betting is not limited to the Grand National; it applies to most horse races and other events. The bet is made up of two equal stakes: one on the horse to win, and one on the horse to place. For example, a £10 Each-Way bet means £5 is placed on the horse to win, and £5 on the horse to place. If the horse wins, both the win and place parts of the bet pay out, but if it only places, only the place part is successful.

In races with fewer participants, the place part of an Each-Way bet may not apply, or may only cover the top two finishers. The number of places covered by the place bet depends on the number of runners in the event and the specific terms set by the bookmaker. In races with more participants, the place terms may extend further, providing more opportunities for the bet to succeed.

The main advantage of Each-Way betting is the reduced risk compared to betting solely on a win, as there are two ways to earn a return. However, because you’re effectively making two bets, the total stake is doubled. In contrast, win betting offers higher returns but is riskier since it relies solely on the selection winning. Whether to choose Each-Way or win betting depends on the individual event, the odds, and the bettor’s risk tolerance.
